Jamian Smith

My life motto is to “Leave Everything I Touch A Little Better Every Day.” I am committed to a world that works for everyone in it, and at heart, I am a fixer and restorer, always looking for mindful, well-thought out solutions that are inclusive and helpful.

Work Experience

I am a seasoned business professional and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in business operations, marketing, strategy, engineering, and people management. I have applied this experience in many companies, including Eastman Kodak, Sears, Expedia, Amazon, the Paul Allen Institute, and Microsoft. I currently balance my role as Principal Program Manager at Microsoft with my startup consulting firm, Arcana Solutions, and I split my time between Charlotte, NC and Seattle, WA.

I am a former Chair of the Board of Directors for the Rat City Rollergirls, and a current angel investor member of the Keiretsu Forum who has served on the due diligence teams for 5 startups who have gone on to receive significant funding. As a certified Six Sigma Black Belt and Lean Kaizen Master, I am a key member of and contributor to the operational process improvement and quality management business communities in Charlotte and Seattle.

Politics and Community Service

I am community conscious and results oriented, so I am very active in local politics and community service organizations. I am a past Vice Chair of the Renton, WA Planning Commission, the Renton Mayor's Inclusion Task Force, and active with the local, county and state Democratic Party. I am a proud Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, and I am a trained mediator with the Dispute Resolution Center of King County.

Education

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was a full-tuition Presidential Scholar and member of the Honors Program. I also hold three master's degrees: a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Marketing and Operations from the Owen School of Business Management at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I was a full-tuition Dean’s Scholar and President of the Owen Black Student’s Association and the Owen Women’s Association; a Master of Legal Studies and a Master of Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law. Personal

I am an Black American, pansexual, cis-gendered woman who was born in Nashville, Tennessee to a a Jamaican immigrant mother and a Black American father who lived through the Jim Crow South, who met as soldiers in the United States Marine Corps. I am a product of public schools with teachers who recognized a gifted child and counseled my parents to seek out additional guidance and support for me, which they did. I am a proud graduate of a historically black college/university, Tennessee State University, and a proud recipient of a great graduate education from the predominantly white Vanderbilt University, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, and the Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution.

I am a Zen Buddhist who peacefully and freely worships in my communities in Charlotte, NC and Seattle, WA, and who fully believes in the separation of church and state. I am an ally and proponent of overall self-determination and self-expression for everyone, and I believe that government is best when it is an expression of the whole caring for the individual—of people coming together to offer a helping hand to those among them who need that help. I am a practical progressive who believes in driving rapid, revolutionary change where it makes sense, and gradual, determined, incremental change where it's needed.

My career and my political work has been focused on using technology and science to increase prosperity and quality of life in our communities. The question I’m always asking myself is: How do we build on our current foundation and recent successes to create a sustainable, durable, self-generating, restorative economy for our communities for generations?

I believe that healthcare, education, and security are basic human rights that are best administered by a central government that is directly accountable to the people it serves and that all members of a society should contribute equitably to that government. I believe that businesses should compete in a free market that is framed and bound by regulations set forth by a government representing the people these businesses make money from and employ to help reach their goals. I believe that non-profit and religious organizations who receive money from a government representing the people should be able and willing to address and support the needs and requirements of ALL who contribute to the money they receive from that government.

I believe that governments have an obligation to their constituents that they mirror their community’s diversity, stay connected to and aware of the changing challenges impacting their communities, and that each elected and appointed individual must be compelled to keep their individual skills sharp so that they can carry out these expectations.
